What started out four years ago, as in most people's eyes, a unique opportunity to see the wonderfully-restored Claregalway castle, has turned into one of the must-attend festivals in the west and also into one of the leading horticultultural events in the country. And this weekend, the Galway Garden Festival is back for round four.

Michael Kelly, founder of Grow it Yourself (GIY) will give a talk entitled ‘Sow Seeds, Harvest Change — five vegetables you can grow to change your life and save the world’ in The Arches Hotel, Claregalway, on Tuesday April 16 at 8pm. This is a free event which aims to inspire people to grow their own vegetables.

And in ten days, the Galway Garden Festival is back for round three, and this time it is to spawn a series of events that will see the lights on at the castle for months to come. Galway has many festivals, and indeed, many festivals in July, all honed over the years into something special. But none of these made the instant impact that the Galway Garden Festival did when it was inaugurated in 2010, over two days of differing climatic conditions at the beautifully-restored Claregalway Castle.

At this year’s GIY (Grow it Yourself) gathering, the organisation rewarded the efforts of GIY Ballina for its outreach work in the community.

A gardening expert who has been gardening since he was seven will be the guest speaker at the third meeting of the Grow it Yourself Oranmore group on Thursday February 4 at Oranmore Library at 6.30pm.
